THOMPSON, N.D. (AP) _ A 75-year-old farmer is headed to trial on charges he let his cows run amok on state Highway 15.

Lloyd Thorsgard has pleaded not guilty to six counts of letting his livestock run at large. A jury trial has been scheduled for Feb. 23.

Court documents filed in Grand Forks County say Thorsgard's cows got loose six times in 2009, sometimes getting onto Highway 15.

State's attorney Peter Welte says there is great concern about the safety on rural roads and the importance of keeping farm animals fenced in.

Thorsgard has about 600 cows on 720 acres in rural Thompson.

In convicted, he faces up to 30 days in prison and a $1,000 fine on each count.
