People in Lisbon have been on pins and needles over the last several days. They say they're barely hanging on as the Sheyenne rushes by at unprecedented levels.

It's been two days since John Carlblom fled from his mother's house on the east bank of the Sheyenne River.

John Carlblom/Lisbon resident, "We had only minutes to leave because the dike breached and we had to leave."

He knows the four pumps he had going in the basement are no longer doing their job.

John, "We just want to know how much water's in the basement because there's no electricity anymore."

Now John is forced to watch from the other side as firefighters work to reinforce the dike that's keeping most of the water out of his home.

Tyler Schock/Lisbon rural fire chief, "Things are calming down right at the moment, but that could all change."

It's been like that all week. Relative quiet until the next thing goes wrong. But so far, flood fighters have been able to stay on top of each situation that pops up.

Tyler, "Getting some seepage in the bags. The river seems to be pushing on it, and they're concerned about it. So as long as we've got time, and there isn't an emergency, we can give it some strength."

And they're finding time to check on john's house between each round of sandbags. There's more than 3 feet of water in the basement.

John, "We'd rather it was either really good or really bad. Otherwise, FEMA can have it, or otherwise it'd have to be halfway decent."

Three feet seems halfway decent for John.   Relatively good news for one resident as Lisbon hangs on. The Sheyenne reached 22.84 feet in Lisbon yesterday.

It's been slowly dropping since, but the city and the corps of engineers aren't taking any chances. They're reinforcing and raising their dikes to 25 feet.
