The dominant "No" votes came from the entire north side of town, the Second Ward's Meadow Golf Course area, as well as Dilworth, Georgetown and Sabin.
Voters in the Moorhead School District have said "no" to a property tax increase to make up for state and federal cutbacks. Tuesday's vote was 4,195 against, 4,078 in favor.

"Yes" votes came from Moorhead's entire south side Third Ward along the river, most of the Fourth Ward in the southeast part of town, and the Second Ward's Knapp/Comstock and MSUM neighborhoods.

The dominant "No" votes came from the entire north side of town, the Second Ward's Meadow Golf Course area, as well as Dilworth, Georgetown and Sabin.

District superintendent Lynn Kovash is disappointed. "You have to look for ways to increase revenue," she says. "We need to get people to understand that students here deserve the same opportunities as every other district in the state."

School officials say they'll have to cut programs and services, and perhaps positions as well, depending on November's audit. They say with this vote, there's no way they can maintain quality of services at the district.

More than a third of the registered voters in the Moorhead School District cast ballots Tuesday.

Perhaps if they had offered to integrate it in phases, or had offered up a smaller number to start with, it would have passed- It almost did at the ridiculous number proposed, but they declined to take into account how financially strapped everybody is, and that we're heading into a holiday season. It's their own fault it didn't pass. It's an awesome idea, and next year they should try for it, but not such a large number to start.
