Charges are possible in a deadly car-sugar beet collision in Wahpeton. Eighteen-year-old Antoinette Gjesdal of Wahpeton, who was driving one of the cars, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash Tuesday afternoon. Police say her car was entering an intersection of the state Highway 210 bypass on Wahpeton's western edge when it was struck by a sugar beet truck, then spun into another car.
Fifty-two-year-old Cathleen Dean of Barney, North Dakota, was driving the beet truck. She suffered minor injuries. The driver of the other car -- 37-year-old Mary Motzko of Wahpeton -- was also injured.
Highway Patrol Sergeant Brian Nieland says charges against Dean could range from a stop sign violation to more serious criminal charges. The Richland County State's Attorney will make that decision.
Dean has several drug-related convictions in recent years, and her license has also been suspended five times. Nieland says troopers did not require the driver of the truck to submit to a blood test to check for alcohol or drugs.
